Today I'm speaking with Teddy Wilson the publisher of the Radical Reports newsletter.
Why?
Because when I think right wing religious zealotry and hate I think Teddy. And, so should you. We are talking about Kim Davis, former clerk of Rowan County, KY who refused famously and with fanatical flourish to marry same sex couples in 2015. I wrote about this for The Guardian back then.
She sat in jail for 5 days and became a right wing starlet. Fast forward to this week in Rowan County, Kentucky. Because she violated the rights of the couples seeking marriage licenses - a jury was empaneled to determine damages.
Just yesterday a federal court ruled she is to pay $100K in damages to the couples she refused to grant marriage licenses.
According to the AP:
A jury in Ashland, Kentucky, awarded David Ermold and David Moore each $50,000 after deliberating on Wednesday, according to lawyers for Davis. A second couple who sued, James Yates and Will Smith, were awarded no damages on Wednesday by U.S. District Judge David Bunning.
So Teddy and I will be talking about Davis but as a symptomatic of the larger right wing movement (going back to the Moral Majority days).
Mike Huckabee's seeming embrace of violence with a post about the 2024 election and bearing arms, and bullets.
We will also talk about state AG and the growing role they play in curbing reproductive rights and civil rights overall - ahem Iowa AG Brenna Bird.
