Can Anyone Find Van Buren County?
It seems like they are getting about $1 million?
Van Buren County was on my list for this week but their public recordkeeping is sparse. Some counties - like Woodbury, Johnson, Linn - have robust websites that are user friendly providing access to agendas, minutes, and other documents. Smaller counties in some cases don’t.
To have an informed electorate and a trasparent government (at any level) access to records is vital.
Many counties and cities hold public meetings at the least convenient time for working people. For some it’s impossible to miss work in order to get to a 9am Board of Supervisor meeting on Tuesday. But those people? They are the ones public officials need to hear from the most.
I did find that Van Buren has set up an American Rescue Act committee within the board of supervisors - this is good. But it isn’t clear who is on the board, what they discussed, etc. (meeting minutes from May 24 alllllll the way at the bottom of the document is mention of American Rescue Plan Act committee).
Making meetings acccessable to all - meaning holding them at convenient times and locations to ensure everyone can participate — with a voice in how federal recovery dollars are spent.
